Literature Text

You are in your room, sitting on a chair in front of your desk, looking down at your open notebook.

Yesterday, your English teacher had told everyone in your class to do an essay about your life here in England. So far nothing has come into your mind to think about what to write…

What makes it even more worst is that you’re not an English speaker and are just a foreigner, which makes it difficult and frustrating for you to come up with an idea to begin with.

You sigh while running your hand through your hair.

You have always wanted to learn the English language which was why you brought yourself here in England in the first place to enrol yourself in a school that teaches foreign students English.

After becoming mildly obsessed with the international celebrities, game shows, movies, and the English culture, you suddenly have the burning desire to learn the universal language to associate and befriends with some English people but so far you found yourself still struggling to learn the language which is upsetting you.

You want to write an essay that could impress your English teacher so that you would be his most favourite pupil and a lot of your international classmates are not quite good with English yet which you thought you could use it to your advantage.

You stare at the blank sheet of your notebook, tapping your ballpen.

Your life here in England… What should you write about?

You sigh again when your lack of English skills give you lack of ideas on what to write.

It would be embarrassing to arrive at your class without an English assignment unlike everybody else, if they all have the potential that is...

Frustrated, you get out of your desk and move to sit on a chair in front of computer, trying to search for a solution for this problem on the internet.

A brilliant idea suddenly occur to you. You grin, feeling in good spirit again.

As you type on Google the solution of helping your English problems, you no longer feel the anxiety and tense of arriving to class tomorrow because it was already been replaced by pure joy and relief.

Why didn’t you think of this in the first place? The solution has been on the internet all along!

-----

The next day. 6pm.

You walked into your 4th night of English class with confidence and full spirit.

Inside the classroom are some of your international classmates chatting amongst themselves loudly in different groups. You walk to your seat from the middle row as you greet back a friendly Spanish guy in your own language.

Your teacher Arthur Kirkland just walked into the class and put his briefcase on top of a desk in front of the blackboard.

“Quiet please” he said as he watch everyone still busy chatting.

“Settle down…!” he instructs with a hand motion to silence everyone but it isn’t effective as everyone is still busy talking loudly.

Arthur turns to the desk in front of the black board and grabs a small bell before raising it to the air, shaking it to create a chiming noise to catch everyone’s attention.

Everyone instantly silence upon hearing the sound of the bell and notices him before returning to their respective seats.

“Thank you” Arthur said before placing the bell back to the desk. “Right” He turns around to face to the class and greets you all

“Good evening”

All of you greeted him back in your own languages whilst sitting down on your seats.

Arthur walks to his desk and picks up a record book “Alright. I’m going to call out your names and will you please answer present?”

Your Polish classmate, Felix, stood up

“Present” he said out loud with a smile.

Arthur, who is sitting on the desk with the record book, looks at him in perplex

“Yes Felix but wait until I call your name out”

Felix nods and sits down, still smiling “Sorry”

Arthur reads out a name from the record book before looking at the class

“Sadig Annan?”

Sadig Annan, a Turkish man behind you, stood up and smile

“Present and current” he said happily before sitting back down.

Arthur looks from the record book

“Lovino Vargas?”

Lovino Vargas who is in the middle row seat, stood up and nod

“Si professori”

Arthur looks at him

“No Lovino, not professori. You should address me as sir”

Lovino nods, sitting down “Si professori”

“Heracles Karpusi?”

After a few seconds of silence, you look over to your right side to see Heracles sleeping on his desk from the middle row seats that is situated next to the wall. Arthur looks around the class, wondering why there is still no response

“Heracles Karpusi?” he repeats, still looking around the class.

Ludwig, who is sitting beside Heracles, wake him up by slapping him on the shoulder which is effective. Heracles looks up at Ludwig in question. Ludwig looks at him in serious “Mr. Kirkland is speaking to you”

Heracles looks at Arthur from the desk and slowly stands up

“You want something?”

Arthur looks at him unamused

“Are you here or not?”

Heracles looks at him weirdly before motioning to himself by spreading his arms

“For sure I’m here”

Arthur reads out the next name from the record book

“Kiku Honda”

Kiku Honda, who sits on the last row, stood up and move to the side of his seat before bowing

“Presento” he said as Arthur calls out the next name

“Ludwig Beilschmidt. Bloody hell these surnames are getting harder” Arthur murmured the last words to himself.

Ludwig, who didn’t bother to stand up, just raises his hand while looking at him

“Ja. Presence”

“Wang Yao?”

Yao, who is reading a small red book about quotations of Chairman Mao, stood up while still carrying the red book

“Plesent”

“Felix Łukasiewicz?” Arthur said slowly, staring intently at the surname before taking off his glasses and looking at the class.

Felix stood up eagerly and immediately respond with wide grin

“Gift”

Arthur stares at him in slightly surprise before tilting his head

“Gift?”

“I surprised you, yes?” he smiles in satisfied upon seeing Arthur’s reaction “Every day I learned a new English word, and I find that gift is another word for present!”

Arthur nods slightly in understanding before writing down Felix’s name on the record book

“Very ingenious…”

Felix continues to smile proudly and sits down “Thank you very much!”

“(f/n) (l/n)?”

You stood up with a pleasant smile

“Present”

You sit down, secretly glad that the word present is an easy English word. Arthur looks down at the next name in distaste and hesitates

“…Francis Bonnefoy?”

Francis Bonney, a French man who sits next to Felix, stood up in a fluent move

“Present” he smiles in a provocative manner, placing his two hands on his desk with a pose

“And I am all available…”

Arthur list down Francis’s name on the record book, ignoring him

“Which is mostly disturbing… Antonio Carriedo?”

Antonio, who is at the last row, stood up in question

“Por favor?”

Arthur looks at him “Present?”

Antonio, who doesn’t understand English, continues to look at him in question

“Por favor?”

Arthur writes down Antonio’s name on the record book “Present it is”

Arthur closes the record book, puts it on the desk and starts walking in front of the class

“Right. Now you remember I asked you all to write an essay, a short story about your life here in England?” he asked while looking around at everyone in expectation.

All of you responded yes in your own languages while raising and waving your notebooks.

“Good. Good” Arthur stops walking and gestures his finger around the class

“Well I shall go around the class and ask each of you to read out what you’ve written” Arthur walks and stops in front of Ludwig, your German classmate’s desk.

“Ludwig. Should we start with you?” he asked while clasping his hands behind his back.
Ludwig stood up immediately while holding and opening up his notebook.

“My life in England. By Ludwig Beilschmidt”

Arthur smiles and nod.

“Good. Very good”

Ludwig sits back down and closes his notebook. Arthur looks down at him before looking around confusingly then back at him

“Yeah but go on” he ushered with a hand gesture

Ludwig looks up at him, expression serious “There is no more”

Arthur stares at him before motioning towards his notebook

“You mean is that all there is?” he asked in disbelief.

Ludwig nod, expression still serious

“Ja. I have no time to write more. All this at my house is keeping me busy. Ludwig let’s do this. Ludwig let’s do that” he sighs, closing his eyes while shaking his head “I swears, he is nothing vithout me…”

Lovino, who is one seat behind, immediately stood up and pointed at him angrily

“How dare you German hotdog call my fratello weak you damn potato eater!” he screeched before was being pulled down back to his seat by Antonio and Sadiq. Arthur hushes him before correcting Ludwig

“Without”

Ludwig nod

“Ja. Vithout” he pauses in thinking before looking up at him again

“Do you know how many pasta he made me ate last night vithout leaving me alone?”
Arthur corrected him again, this time saying it slowly

“Without”

Ludwig nod

“Ja. Vithout!” he looks at him in serious “Zen I had to take my bitch around the streets”
Arthur’s eyes widens before blinking and awkwardly looking around the class then back at him

“Ludwig, he may be a hard task and a potential lover but I don’t think you ought to call him that”

Ludwig looks at him confusingly

“Who?”

Arthur blinks

“Your Italian friend, isn’t he the one you’re referring to?” Arthur asked, this time feeling confuse.

Ludwig looks at him

“I vas meaning the dog bitch”

Arthur jerks his head a little backwards, stunned “Oh...! I see…” he nods, feeling slightly embarrassed.

“That is vhy I’m having no time for the homework” Ludwig explained to him once again.

“Yes uh, well not to worry” Arthur looks at him earnestly “You really must concentrate on those w sounds” Arthur said before making a consonant sound of w

“Woe”

Ludwig listens before imitating him “Voe”

“No, woe”

“Voe” Ludwig tries again until his seatmate Heracles offers to help him say it correctly.

Arthur moves to Francis’s desk

“Fro- I mean Francis, would you like to read us your essay?” he asked before standing in front of his desk.

Francis holds his notebook before standing up graciously “Oui”

Francis opens his notebook subtly while smiling daintily

“What I like about England” Francis gazes at him intently “by Francis Bonnefoy” Francis leans a little forward to him while holding his notebook to his chest

“Telephone 24681203…”

Arthur slowly nods “Good, carry on…” He quickly shakes his head

“No! Never mind about giving your number” he scolded “You’re here to improve your English, not go on a date with all of the students” he said, gesturing to the rest of you who are sitting.

He looks back at Francis

“Now carry on”

Francis pouts before reading his notebook again

“I like England because ze grazz is so green, and ze popol are so nice-

“People” Arthur immediately corrects him. Francis nods

“Yes”

Francis looks at his notebook before at Arthur, slowly leaning a bit to him, smiling

“Especially ze man…~”

Francis slowly leans another closer to him while reading his notebook

“Englishman are so charming…~” he said in a musing face before lowering his notebook, gazing intently at him

“So handsome…~” he said in a seductive tone “So sexy… and-

“Yeah, I think that will do, Francis” Arthur immediately interrupts while staring at him in discomfort and irritation.

Francis blinks

“But I’ve written much more…!” he profess before smiling at him suggestively

“All about the things I like to do at night…~”

Arthur stares at him in blanch before shaking his head

“No, I don’t think we better go into those. Go take a seat Francis” he quickly walks away from him to another student’s desk as Francis looks at him in fake hurt expression while sitting back down on his seat.

“Lovino. I suppose you already done your essay, haven’t you?” Arthur asked while stopping in front of Lovino’s desk. Lovino nods and stood up with his notebook “Si”

He looks at his notebook and begins to read loudly

“La mia vita in Inghilterra”

Arthur blinks repeatedly before interrupting him

“Wait, why are you speaking in Italian?” he asked in stunned. Lovino looks at him strangely

“You told us to write an essay, right? Now what is wrong?”

Arthur sighs before holding his temples, shaking his head

“Know what? Just take a seat. I’ll deal with your essay later…” he said before walking away from his desk. Lovino stares at him in dumbfounded before protesting

“But professori! I spend so much time in writing this essay and now you don’t want me to read it in front?” he complains as he is being pulled to sit down by Sadiq.

Arthur stands in front of Antonio’s desk, looking at him in expectant

“Antonio. Perhaps you’re ready to read us your essay?”

Antonio stands up, looking at him while smiling

“Por favor?

Arthur sighs while rubbing his temple

“Look. You really must start to speak a little Antonio...”

Antonio, who doesn’t understand him, looks at him wonderingly

Arthur makes a gestures of his mouth while looking at him in earnest

“Speak”

Antonio grins as he finally understood what Arthur meant and nods

“Ahh…! Sí. Hay algo que quieres que diga en clase?”

Arthur grimaces before shaking his head

“No. No. No. I mean in English. You must try to speak in English”

Antonio raises his eyebrow at him in confuse with a questionable hand gesture

“Por favor?”

Arthur signs in defeated and gestures for him to sit down

“Never mind. Sit down”

Antonio sits down, still feeling confuse.

Arthur moves to Yao’s desk

“Yao. Have you written anything?” he asked, standing in front of the Chinese man’s desk. Yao smiles while eagerly standing up with his notebook

“Yes. Yes, aru”

Arthur smiles in relief and gestures for him to start as Yao opens his notebook.

Arthur leans a little closer to make sure that he is seeing that Yao is actually opening the notebook starting from the back page instead of the front page. Yao sees his writing and then starts to read

“What I rike about England” he said smiles at Arthur after reading the title. Arthur nods for him to continue. Yao looks back down at his handwritings

“England is becoming more poriticarry minded and gladually more reft wing!” he begins speaking like a politician much to Arthur’s surprise.

“The overthlow of decadent capitaristic government will soon take prace. As working crasses become more educated and emblace communism as the tlue way of rife!”

Arthur just continues to stand there in unamused as Yao turn to the next page of his essay

“Workers levolution getting nealer within inevitable corrapse of Impeliaristic bougoise interrectual society” Yao closes his notebook in pleased, smiling at Arthur before sitting down on his seat. Arthur looks down at him in dim expression

“Well if that’s what you like about England then I wouldn’t want to hear what you didn’t like”

Arthur moves to the last row of seats and stops in front of Kiku’s desk.

“Kiku. Have you done your essay?”

Kiku stands up with his notebook and moves to the side before bowing

“Hai”

He opens his notebook and begins to read

“My life-o, hero, at Englando”

Arthur nods for him to continue as Kiku looks down at his essay once again

“I learno that Englando, is a country-o of tea fetisho…”

Arthur blinks repeatedly in unexpected before continuing to listen to him

“Englisho foodo are not very goodo…” he said with a facial reaction as Arthur stares at him in stunned.

“In Japan, the foodo there, are much more bettero…“  Kiku continues, oblivious to Arthur’s stance and discomfort

“In Japan, we have-o, much more advanced televisiono and telephonos…” Kiku pauses before continuing to the next sentence

“In Japan, we inventedo electronic games-o with best human modelso of 2D and 3D, especially the animalso…”

Arthur looks around uncomfortably before listening back at Kiku who is reading his notebook

“In Japan, we have the most- Arthur interrupted him with a hand signal

“Kiku, you are supposed to write about your life here in England, not advertise
Japan…” he explained, frowning. Kiku looks up at him then down at his essay before bowing in apology

“Gomenasai…”

Arthur sighs and gestures for him to sit down which Kiku did.

Your heart pumps in excitement when Arthur is finally approaching your way. It means it is now your turn. The moment you’ve been waiting to proudly present your best essay.

Arthur stands in front of your desk, giving you a smile

“(f/n). I presumed you’ve done your essay?”

You stand up with your notebook and nod with a smile “Yes, Mr. Kirkland. In fact, I work very hard on it”

Arthur smiles in pleased

“Good. Good. Then shall we hear it?” he gestures to your notebook before clasping his hands behind his back.

You nodded and start opening your notebook, eyeing your first sentences.

“My life here in England” you introduced before continuing to your first sentences

“In England, I so much enjoy look the places famous Ben Tower building like” you smiled in pleased when you saw Arthur’s surprise reaction. Satisfied, you continued

“The attractions, movies, celebrities, the British people, me love much very them is why me England go to English the study…!” you said with emotion.

You heart is filled with delight when you saw Arthur’s jaw drop slowly on the corner of your eyes while reading.

“After Harry Potter watch me, I inspire to England the place to go stalk English real people and the Hogwarts experience for having” you smile happily when you see Arthur’s frozen stance, which means he is beyond surprise by your amazing essay.

“Then me England go to English the study and English improve by school go to enrol”

Arthur weakly stops you with a hand motion, smiling waveringly

“T-That’s enough, (f/n)…. Thank you!”

You look at him stunned, blinking

“But I’m no finish. I have more to say… Can I continue?”

Arthur shakes his head feebly, smiling weakly

“No, it’s alright, (f/n). I’ll read the rest later…” he walks to the front of the class and quickly announces

“Break time everyone. You can now have your break” after saying that, he immediately gets to the door, being the first one to leave for a break.

All of you stood up from your seats to leave the classroom. As you step out from your sit,
Felix approaches you, smiling

“That was a very great essay, (f/n)! How you do it?”

You turn to him, smiling

“I use Google translate. You should try it”
Now you know.

Hands down one of the funniest stories I've read so far. Keep up the good work! (Poor Arthur!)
